Last Thursday, February 23, 2012, IDF (Zahal) soldiers performing routine patrol identified suspicious activity along the Israel-Egypt border. Following an attempt to apprehend and arrest the suspect, who managed to escape, a search in the area was conducted and a bag containing a large explosive device was discovered. The device was detonated in a controlled manner.

This is the second attempt to smuggle an explosive device into Israel in the past week. A previous attempt was thwarted during a joint IDF (Zahal)-Israel Police activity on Monday, February 20, 2012.
