COGAT Spokesman announced today, June 7th, 2012, that the fuel transfers from Qatar to Gaza through Israel has begun. The Qatar Government donated 130,000 liters of fuel that were coordinated in order to enter the Gaza Strip today. In addition, Kerem Shalom Crossing will be open tomorrow to continue the fuel transfer.
Following the request of the Egyptian government for transferring diesel fuel to the Gaza Strip totaling about 30 million liters (about 10-15 containers every day), the Minister of Defense approved the transfer of fuel from Egypt through Israel to the Gaza Strip.
The COGAT, Major General, Eitan Dangot, led the staff work with Southern Command personnel, the coordination and connection administration of Erez Crossing, the Foreign Ministry, the Crossings Authority of the Defense Ministry, the Israel Airports Authority, Taxes Authority, the Environmental Protection Ministry and the Israel Police in order to coordinate the fuel transfer from Egypt through Nitzana and Erez Crossing to the Gaza Strip.
The staff work included coordination with Egyptian Government and Palestinian Authority officials in order to transfer the fuel.
The fuel transfer is expected to continue approximately three months and should allow fuel transfer to the power station in the Gaza Strip meant to assist the distress in the Gaza Strip due to the lack of fuel and reduce the amount of long electrical blackouts.
